2008 Comics Contest Winners Announced

Winning creators will share in more than $200 in prizes and all contestants receive their scores and feedback from our panel of industry professionals!

About the Comics Contest:

The Lakeland Community College Comics Contest recognizes amateur artists in various age groups for work in comic strip and graphic fiction.

During the 2008 Contest, a panel of judges comprised of industry professionals will review entries and winners will be announced at the Wednesday March 26th Symposium/Book Discussion.

Contest entrants need not attend Symposium.

All entries will be displayed at the Symposium and Symposium participants will participate as judges to select an additional "People's Choice" winner.

The Lakeland Community College Comics Contest is not an "art contest." There are many elements to comics and graphic fiction two of which are writing and illustrating and you need not be proficient in both to have your work evaluated.

Submissions will be judged on important comics and graphic fiction criteria such overall concept, copywriting, storyline, visual composition, ability to convey topic and tone, originality and development of characters, technical proficiency, and, for comic strip submissions, humor.

Contest Categories:

Submissions for events will be judged in the following categories:

Middle School Graphic Fiction	Middle School Comic Strip
High School Graphic Fiction	High School Comic Strip
Adult (Post High School) Graphic Fiction	Adult (Post High School) Comic Strip

Submitting Entries:

Entries can be submitted via the following methods:

Hard Copy Sent USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL or other delivery method.
Electronic File Sent USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL or other delivery method.
Electronic File Sent Electronically as JPG, GIF, PDF or BMP Formats.
Hand Deliver Submissions At the Symposium Registration Table.

All submissions must include a completed entry form [available here].

There is a $12.00 submission fee for the first submission and $8.00 for each additional submission, up to five entries, for advance submissions.

There is a $15.00 submission fee per submission, up to five entries, for Day-Of-Submissions.

Danny Fingeroth : Publisher, Write Now! Magazine and former writer/editor for Marvel Comics
Nat Gertler: Co-Author, Complete Idiot's Guide to Creating a Graphic Novel and Publisher of About Comics
Francesco Marciuliano : Writer, Sally Forth and Emmy-award winning television writer
Chris Warner : Senior Editor, Dark Horse Books and 20-plus year veteran of comics industry as artist, writer and editor
Carla Ventresca: Greeting Card artist and co-creator of the syndicated strip On a Clair Day

The Lakeland Community College Comics Contest will award First, Second and Third Place certificates suitable for framing in addition to hundreds of dollars in prizes.

In addition, to having their work seen and reviewed by top industry professionals, contest participants will receive copies of their judging forms for invaluable critical review!
