At the Cutting Edge of Stem Cell Science...Ethical and Policy IssuesOver the past decade, embryonic stem cell research has emerged as one of the world's most controversial areas of biomedical research. While alternative methodologies are being perfected that appear to sidestep the debate over the use of human embryos, these new techniques raise a host of issues in their own right. Furthermore, as stem cell research marches toward clinical applications for patients, the scientific and ethical issues will continue to evolve in ever more complex directions.
Created by the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and the Department of Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, this intensive summer seminar addresses the major issues in the science, ethics and policies of stem cell research. This weeklong course will facilitate a fuller appreciation of the ethical and policy issues at the cutting edge of stem cell science by simultaneously providing a sound grasp of the science of stem cell research. No prior knowledge of stem cell biology is necessary.
